Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is one of the more interesting smartphones

The Galaxy S6 Edge is probably the most ambitious smartphone ever from Samsung. Sure the Galaxy Note kicked off phablets in 2010, and the Note Edge was the first to have a functional, curved screen, but the S6 Edge is the first to bring together meizu mx5 review quality materials, top-notch construction, and specs galore in a phone fit for regular people.

While the S6 Edge and its sibling, the S6, are clearly cut from the same cloth as previous generations of Galaxy S smartphones, they take a dramatic new step forward thanks to the metal and glass design. The Edge trades the cheap-feeling plastic of its predecessors for gorgeous glass that hugs an aluminum frame. The front and back panels are both made from Gorilla Glass 4, but the front has been curved through a process Samsung calls 3D thermal-forming. Essentially, Samsung heated the glass to over 800 degrees and wrapped the glass around a rod to achieve the curved shape. I think it looks great.

The glass panels are fitted tightly to the metal band that forms the outer edges of the phone. The band is thin along the sides to accommodate the curved glass, and thickens at the top and bottom to provide strength and rigidity. Samsung polished the edges of the metallic band to give them some extra sparkle. Matching accents can be found on the home button, earpiece grill, and camera module. The quality is top-notch. Samsung clearly took great care in designing and assembling the S6 Edge. It absolutely goes toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPhone and HTC’s One in terms of fit and finish.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport for Sprint

The GS5 Sport from Sprint is surprisingly different from the GS5 Active from AT&T. It loses the Active's thicker, sturdier corners. The Active's outer edge is framed in hardened rubber. In contrast, the Sport's is simply a chunkier plastic shell that feels more solid than the standard GS5 model, but not as robust as the Active's. You could say the GS5 Sport sits between the GS5 and GS5 Active in terms of toughness, though it is much closer to the standard GS5 than the Active. That's a bit of a disappointment.

Where the GS5 has a chrome-colored band circling the outer edge, the Sport has a matte-finished polycarbonate frame. The phone has lots of textures and lines running all over the place. I find it somewhat disjointed-looking. The colored plastics are a nice change from black, but any device that has "Sport" branding needs to be either super sleek or much more rugged. Unlike the Active, I'd be afraid to drop the Sport. I certainly wouldn't kick it, throw it, or smack it with a hockey stick. These are things you can do with the Active. Skip the roughhousing with the Sport.

The Sport is a big phone. People with small hands may find it too big. The thick sides mean it doesn't rest comfortably in your hand, it doesn't cheap meizu mx5 nestle into your palm. You can feel just how wide the phone is. On the positive side, it feels robust. It should fit into most pockets without too much trouble, but the rim protecting the display means the phone is easy to feel against your leg as you move about.

Microsoft Lumia 735 for Verizon Wireless

Lumia smartphones all share a similar design aesthetic. The branches of the family tree are rather short. While they are easy to differentiate from competitors' handsets thanks to their plain-yet-compelling shapes, Lumias are also beginning to blend into one another. To my eyes, the Lumia 735 is a shrunken Lumia 920 (which, by the way, is from 2012).

The 735 is a dark gray slab with flat top and bottom edges, rounded side edges, and a back surface that tapers ever-so-gently from the center toward the sides. It is formed by a polycarbonate shell with a matte finish. Sadly, this matte finish displays fingerprint oils, which mar the look a bit. I like the shape of the phone, but -- as with nearly all Lumias -- I wish it were a bit thinner. It's not setting any records at 10.2mm thick.

There's no denying the phone has a clean look to it, but it might be nice if it were available in colors other than dark gray. Lumia handsets often come in at least two or three shades, but not so with the Lumia 735. You're stuck with neutral gray.

The 735 is really nice to hold and use. The 4.7-inch screen means Microsoft was able to keep the overall size of the phone in a comfortable zone. It fits well in the hand and the curved sides really help when meizu m2 note you grip the phone tightly. The weight of the phone is pleasingly light; in fact, it's almost too light. The 735 is compact enough that shoving it into your pockets won't be troublesome.

An unnamed company is preparing to announce the "Axon Phone" July 14. A teaser web site provides some preliminary information about the handset, which runs Android. Axon said more details will be revealed next month; however, PCMag was able to dig up some details that shed new light on the Axon Phone. PCMag claims Axon is a "marketing scheme" cooked up by ZTE. ZTE branding and code is clearly seen in the Axon web site. Further, Axon's headquarters shares the same address with ZTE's U.S. headquarters. ZTE mostly sells low-cost handsets via prepaid carriers in the U.S., but has higher ambitions. The Axon Phone may be an attempt by the company to break into the U.S. market with different branding.
